The human body becomes a machine the functioning of which could be optimized, calculated, and improved. The function, movements and capabilities were broken down into narrow segments, analyzed in detail and recomposed in a maximally effective way.Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, quoted on her slide
At the periphery, an annular building; at the centre, a tower; this tower is pierced with wide windows that open onto the inner side of the ring; the peripheric building is divided into cells, each of which extends the whole width of the building; they have two windows, one on the inside, corresponding to the windows of the tower; the other, on the outside, allows the light to cross the cell from one end to the other.Foucault, quoted in full on her slide
The Panopticon is a royal menagerie; the animal is replaced by man, individual distribution by specific grouping and the king by the machinery of a furtive power.Foucault, quoted on her slide, on individualizing observation, classification and the analytical arrangement of space

Week 3 runs across two lectures. Each tab keeps its own notes and its own date, saved in this browser beside the highlights on the reading guide.
What each author argues goes in the notes by text on the reading guide. This page is for what was said in the room. The third tab holds what the professor posted, which is the closest thing there is to a list of what she thinks is worth knowing.
Type straight into a tab and it saves on its own. Cmd or Ctrl + B for bold, + I for italic, + H for the last colour you used, and again to take it off. Selecting text brings up a small bar with bold, italic, a bullet list and the colours. Typing - or 1. starts a list, ### starts a heading, and Tab inside a list indents.
